Cosmology

There is more to existence than the world before your eyes.

The Material

The world of Sakuru is shaped like a disc, rotating on top of a cosmic prayer wheel, which spins once each day, repeating the mantras that keep the world in motion. This is the Material plane, the world you know and live in.

The Ethereal

The Ethereal is a shifting, black-and-white reflection of the Material that exists alongside the Material in all places. Travel in the Ethereal allows a creature, and any objects carried, to move through physical barriers in the Material, although living things cannot be bypassed this way.

An ethereal creature is invisible, incorporeal, and capable of moving in any direction, even up or down. An ethereal creature can see the Material Plane up to 60 feet, but everything looks gray and hazy. An ethereal creature cannot use any other senses or detect abilities on Material things.

A noise like a strong wind blowing permeates the Ethereal, and sound is slightly distorted and echoing.

Astral Heavens

The gods live in the Astral Heavens above the world, in and beyond the sky. Tales of heroes who traveled there recount that it is a silvery void, dotted with oases where the strongest spirits occupy their own mansions (reflected as constellations in the night sky). A faint ringing all around you is the sign that the prayer wheel is spinning, infinite miles below.

The spirits of the dead exist here as well, some watching over their descendents, some serving powerful spirits or gods, and some roaming the void, dangerous spiritual outcasts, hungering for life. Wandering the Astral Heavens without a guide can leave travelers open to attack by demons and bodiless horrors.
