Circle of Existence

Page history last edited by Jeff 13 years ago

The Circle of Existence consists of deities representing major physical elements of the world. Although called a "circle," the Existence gods appear to have no interest in organizing around principles. In fact, the Existence gods have little to do with the Circle of Essence at all. They seem aware of, but indifferent to, concepts such as good, evil, law, or chaos. Existence gods can be talked with, but they always act on their own motives, according to their own ways.

Unlike the Essence gods, Existence gods have permanent manifestations on the material plane. To an extent, they exist in all of creation, where they can be encountered (and even fought) by mortals. Every rock is not necessarily Mountainchurn, but every rock contains a spirit that is a small part of Mountainchurn. Folk tales tell of heroes who bargained with the fickle air god, Spreth, or learned to dry curewort from the bear spirit in the Feralwood.

Elemental Gods

The four elemental gods live remote from civilization. When they have visibly manifested, it has been in the form of topographically large elementals: hill, lake, hurricane, forest fire. They are Spreth (air), Mountainchurn (earth), Quarss (water), and Cracklelash (fire).

Animal Gods

The animal gods are especially unpredictable and savage. Most wild animals have a corresponding animal god, living in the Feralwood, a mythical forest said to lie to the west. The wolf god in particular is said to eat trespassers in his domain. Other animal gods are not likely to be any more merciful, although legends of mortals who bargained with the animal gods float around.

Plant God

The plant god (or gods) is unknowable. It exists, since plants have demonstrable spirits. However, Plant only manifests as an unintelligent force. A few zealots have believed that Plant has a coherent intelligence beyond comprehension, but they are considered mad. Nonetheless, Plant responds to worship and attention as any other god by granting spells and communicating divination information through individual plants.
